In what political observers have termed as one of the greatest political summersault in recent times, the serial governorship hopeful of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun state, Mr. Ladi Adebutu may be preparing to ditch his party and pitch his tent with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A online news medium that is closely known with Adebutu gave the hint on Monday.
The online medium said, “Speculations (sic) has however, (sic) been rife about Adebutu considering a switch to the All Progressives Congress (APC) upon reclaiming his mandate, with the purported intention of fortifying the support base of President Bola Tinubu in the South West.”
More than 48 hours since the publication was made, neither the Ogun State PDP nor Adebutu has denied it.
As if to lend credence to the orchestrated report, Adebutu has been quoted as saying on the same occasion that, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu belongs to us all. Nobody can (sic) claim to the presidency; it belongs to all Nigerians. Stop harassing us; we are all Tinubu’s children.”
However, political observers have wondered when Adebutu became Tinubu’s child when he openly campaigned on national television stations and other platforms for PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and against Tinubu, saying it was not yet the turn of the Yoruba to become President.
They noted that Adebutu’s sudden volte-face may be as a result of the criminal charges of money laundering and vote-buying hanging on his neck.
Recall that some members of the PDP in Ogun state have been charged to court for vote-buying during the March 18, 2023 governorship and House of Assembly elections.
The accused have made confessional statements indicting Adebutu for allegedly instructing Zenith Bank some days to the election to pre-load N10,000 into 200,000 verve cards in the name of an unregistered foundation named after his mother, the late Madam Caroline Adebutu.
The money was said to have been raised from one of the 77 accounts being allegedly used by Ladi Adebutu for some nefarious purposes.
While most of the culprits have cooperated with the Police and other agencies of the Federal Government during the investigation up to their arraignment, Adebutu succeeded in stalling his interview by the Police and accepting court summons until he resurfaced a fortnight ago after being abroad for eight months on a purported “medical vacation.”
But, what remains to be seen is if the APC will accept him into their fold given his perennial and desperate ambition to be governor of Ogun state when many of those who know him closely say he does not have what it takes to govern a sophisticated state like Ogun. Indeed, he has been described by one his newly found allies as “the worst of the Adebutus”.
