President Bola Tinubu, in a commendable gesture, honored the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday with the prestigious national award of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), along with grants of flats in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and plots of land.
The announcement was made by President Tinubu during a reception for the players and officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja. Leading the delegation was the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh.
The Super Eagles recently achieved a commendable feat by finishing as runners-up in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), hosted by Côte d’Ivoire.
Attending the event were all team members and officials, including Alex Iwobi, who had been subjected to cyber attacks following Nigeria’s loss to Cote d’Ivoire in the final match.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised the team, coach, crew, and management for their dedication, hard work, and sacrifices throughout the tournament. He highlighted their remarkable journey, overcoming obstacles with consistently improving performance to reach the finals.
President Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain optimistic, emphasizing the significant victory achieved through the team’s resilience, determination, and unity on the field.
He said, “Let this recent event serve as a unifying force, motivating us to strive harder. As a nation, we are bonded by our resilience, joy, hope, duty, and unwavering love symbolized by the green-white-green banner.
“To the aspiring Nigerian youths showcasing their talents in communities and on football fields, you have the potential to become our future heroes. Do not relent in your endeavors. My administration is committed to nurturing dreams and transforming them into reality.”
