The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans for a two-day nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and February 28, 2024. According to Joe Ajaero, the NLC’s National President, this protest comes in response to the state of the economy and concerns about insecurity in the country. Ajaero made these remarks during a briefing with journalists in Abuja following an emergency National Executive Council meeting.
The protest is set to commence a week after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued by the NLC to the Federal Government, which is set to lapse on February 23. The ultimatum, issued on February 8 alongside the Trade Union Congress, outlined demands including wage increments and improved access to public utilities. The NLC accused the government of failing to fulfill promises aimed at mitigating the impact of recent reforms.
Ajaero emphasized the importance of the Federal Government adhering to the deadline of the 14-day ultimatum. The NLC expressed deep concern over the economic challenges faced by millions of Nigerian workers, including hunger, reduced purchasing power, and insecurity. These challenges have been exacerbated by recent reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies in May and the lifting of restrictions on currency trading, which led to a significant increase in petrol prices.
In light of these circumstances, the NLC urges the government to address the grievances of workers and take immediate steps to alleviate the economic hardship faced by the populace.
