The Nigerian Army (NA) has refuted claims of a potential coup plot against the democratically elected administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In response to a report circulating online suggesting suspicions of a coup amid the country’s economic challenges, the NA labeled the claims as “fake news.”
Previously, General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), cautioned against calls for a coup amidst economic hardships.
While an online publication hinted at heightened security measures by the Presidential Guards Brigade due to perceived coup suspicions, the NA swiftly debunked these assertions.
The report alleged that emergency meetings involving key figures like Col. Adebisi Onasanya, Commander of the Presidential Guards Brigade, President Tinubu, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila had taken place following unusual armored corps movements.
However, the NA’s official response via its verified handle dismissed these claims without delving into specifics.
Amidst mounting tensions caused by economic hardships, including rising inflation and protests triggered by fuel subsidy removal and currency adjustments, such rumors add to the prevailing uncertainty.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has scheduled a nationwide protest on February 27 and 28 to voice concerns over the dire economic situation.
