After guiding the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles, to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), coach Jose Peseiro has decided to step down from his role.

Despite reaching the final, where the team faced a defeat against Cote D’ivoire, Peseiro’s tenure as coach has come to an end as his contract expired in February.

Although there were discussions regarding the renewal of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Peseiro has chosen to resign from his position.

In a statement shared on his official account, Peseiro expressed his pride and gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Super Eagles over the past 22 months. He thanked the NFF officials, including Sir Amaju Pinnick, President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and Secretary Dayo Enebi, as well as the entire staff and players for their dedication and support during his tenure.

“We conclude our contract with the NFF yesterday. Coaching the Super Eagles has been a pride and honor for me. Over the past 22 months, it has been a journey filled with dedication, sacrifice, and immense enthusiasm,” Peseiro wrote.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in this journey, especially the players, whose commitment and talent made leading the team a great pleasure. While we bid farewell to this chapter, we remain forever grateful and available to support the team in any capacity,” he added.

Peseiro’s departure marks the end of an era for the Super Eagles, leaving behind a legacy of passion and commitment on the field.
