The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has reaffirmed the Nigerian military’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy. He emphasized that the military fully embraces democracy as the nation’s chosen system of governance.
Speaking at a seminar on career planning and management organized by the Army headquarters in Abuja, Lagbaja urged officers of the Nigerian Army to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in their duties.
He stated, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria, especially the Nigerian Army, unequivocally supports democracy and has no intention of undermining it. We are staunch advocates of democracy and will continue to uphold and defend our constitution under all circumstances.”
Lagbaja emphasized the importance of elected leaders leading the nation, while the military fulfills its constitutional obligations. He underscored the need for Nigerian Army personnel to exhibit professionalism and integrity in carrying out their duties.
This assurance follows recent remarks by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, who, during the inauguration of key facilities in Port Harcourt, reiterated the military’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democracy. General Musa condemned calls for military intervention, labeling those advocating such actions as enemies of the nation. He assured that the military would take decisive action against any individuals attempting to destabilize the country’s democratic institutions, citing recent events in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic as cautionary examples.
