A woman identified as Rukayat has been taken into police custody for allegedly poisoning her one-year-old daughter with an insecticide in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos State.

The incident, which took place around 11 a.m. on Friday, has shocked the community.

According to a police source, the infant had epilepsy, and the mother, overwhelmed by the circumstances, confessed to poisoning her daughter in a bid to “rest from the stress.”

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the mother is in custody, and investigations are underway.

He said, “Detectives were dispatched to the hospital, where the baby was receiving treatment. The mother has been taken into custody, and the investigation is ongoing.”

This tragic event echoes a similar case from last year when a 39-year-old woman, Lilian Nwarache, tragically ended her life by drinking insecticide in the Iwaya area of Lagos State due to frustration with her illness.
