A 35-year-old man, Monday Ikeagwu, was ordered to be remanded in a correctional center by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abakaliki. He stands accused of threatening to kill his own mother and stealing N625,000 from her.
The police charged Ikeagwu with threat to life and theft of his mother, Jacinta’s, money.
Magistrate Lillian Ogodo, citing jurisdictional constraints, refrained from accepting Ikeagwu’s plea.
Instead, Ogodo directed that the case file and all evidence be sent to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal counsel.
The matter was adjourned to March 29 for further proceedings.
During the hearing, Prosecution Counsel Insp Chinagorom Eze informed the court that Ikeagwu committed the offenses on February 7 in Obodoma Ekka community, Ezza North local government area of Ebonyi.
Eze detailed that Ikeagwu allegedly threatened his mother with a firearm and also stole N625,000 in cash from her possession.
The prosecution argued that Ikeagwu’s actions contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, 2009.
In response, defense counsel Solomon Eguji sought bail for his client, which was opposed by Eze.
Eze expressed concern that granting bail might lead to Ikeagwu’s disappearance and urged the court to reject the application.
