Only 16 out of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have submitted proposals regarding the establishment of state police, as announced by the National Economic Council (NEC) yesterday. Despite unanimous support from all states, only a fraction have taken concrete steps towards this crucial security initiative.
In addition to addressing security concerns, the NEC also gave the green light to the implementation of the $617.7 million Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (i-DICE) program across all states and the FCT.
However, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation revealed that many states are yet to reimburse the N1.72 trillion budget support grant extended during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
During the virtual 140th meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasis was placed on the urgent need for state participation in nominating representatives for the zonal level and focal persons to oversee program implementation.
Senator Shettima stressed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to fostering prosperity and equal opportunities for all Nigerians. He underscored the importance of skill acquisition and job creation in achieving this goal.
The i-DICE program, presented by Mr. Shekarau Omar, Executive Director of SMEs at the Bank of Industry, is a significant intervention aimed at generating millions of jobs in the technology sector. Funding from organizations such as the African Development Bank (AfDB), the French Development Agency (AFD), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) will support this initiative, with a total breakdown of funds provided.
Omar outlined the program’s potential impact, including the training and certification of over a million youths in ICT skills, job creation at both state and national levels, and the creation of indirect employment opportunities.
Financial updates provided during the meeting included the balances of the Excess Crude Account (ECA), the Stabilization Account, and the current balance of natural resources.”
