Two female students at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, tragically lost their lives in a stampede that erupted at the university’s convocation square during a palliative distribution organized by the Nasarawa State government.
According to a source within the university, the stampede resulted in the suffocation of two female students, while numerous others sustained various injuries of varying degrees.
Confirming the incident, Yunusa Baduku, the National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association, lamented the unfortunate turn of events, highlighting the overwhelming crowd that overpowered security measures and breached the venue’s gate.
Baduku revealed that the injured students were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, with some being treated at the Federal Medical Center, Keffi. He sadly acknowledged the loss of one student’s life due to the stampede.
Despite the tragedy, Baduku expressed gratitude to the university’s management, student leaders, and state government representatives for their swift response in providing assistance and medical care to the affected students.
It’s worth noting that the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, had recently initiated a palliative distribution program, providing each student of various educational institutions in the state with essential supplies, including bags of rice and financial aid.
