The Federal Government has taken a step to address the concerning statements made by Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, regarding the activities of bandits in Nigeria. Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and Orientation, announced during a press briefing at the State House, Abuja, that Gumi has been summoned for questioning by the government.

Idris emphasized that Gumi, like everyone else, is subject to the law, and it is imperative for the government to investigate his remarks. Gumi had offered to engage in dialogue with bandits responsible for the abduction of approximately 287 schoolchildren from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna state, although the exact number of abducted children remains disputed.

In his commentary, Gumi urged against repeating the alleged mistake of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who purportedly refused to engage in dialogue with bandits. Gumi has previously acted as a mediator on behalf of state governments to secure the release of abducted individuals.

The recent release of the Kaduna children, without the payment of ransom as claimed by the Federal Government, has been commended by President Buhari. Idris asserted that the government is resolute in apprehending and punishing all individuals involved in the abduction.

Addressing concerns over Gumi’s statements, Idris emphasized that while constructive suggestions are welcome, any remarks deemed reckless by the security agencies will not be tolerated. He reiterated that nobody is above the law, highlighting that Gumi has previously cooperated with security agencies for questioning regarding his statements, especially those concerning national security.

The government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and will take appropriate action to address any threats or risks to national security.
