Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on Lagos residents and Nigerians at large to allow the positive impact of the strengthening Naira against the dollar to be reflected in the prices of goods and services across the country.
Sanwo-Olu made this appeal during the Combined Special Prayers for Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu, commemorating Easter and Ramadan celebrations, as well as President Tinubu’s 72nd birthday. The event was organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs at the Lagos House in Ikeja on Friday.
Encouraging Nigerians, particularly Christians, to contemplate the sacrifice and love demonstrated by Jesus Christ through His crucifixion and resurrection, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for the recent economic improvements to translate into tangible benefits for the people.
Addressing attendees, including religious leaders who prayed for President Tinubu’s wellbeing and that of the nation, Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of reflecting the strengthened Naira in the prices of essential commodities such as rice, beans, and tomatoes.
He stated, “As the Naira continues to gain strength, it is imperative that this reflects in the cost of goods and services. We must move away from justifications for price increases and ensure that as it came up, it also comes down to alleviate the burden on our citizens.”
Commending President Tinubu for his visionary leadership, Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about the positive trajectory of the nation’s economy and urged everyone to enjoy the festive season in moderation while maintaining peace and tranquility.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the patience and understanding of Lagos residents amidst various interventions by the government, including healthcare, transportation, and security measures. Sanwo-Olu reiterated the commitment of his administration to providing solutions to economic challenges.
In a separate event organized by The Mandate Group, a Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) loyalist group, prayers were offered for President Tinubu’s administration and the progress of Nigeria. Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, Cardinal James Odumbaku, and Senator Ganiyu Olarenwaju Solomon were among the notable APC leaders present.
Obasa emphasized the importance of spiritual support for President Tinubu in his efforts to revamp the economy and address insecurity challenges in the country, underscoring the need for collective prayers to achieve national transformation.
