In a heartbreaking incident at the Olomore Housing Estate in Abeokuta, Ogun State, a 15-year-old girl lost her life to electrocution.
The unfortunate event occurred around 11:50 pm on Sunday while the girl was attempting to draw water from a well within the estate.
Reports indicate that she ventured out to fetch water during a power outage in the compound. However, tragedy struck when electricity was unexpectedly restored while she was still at the well.
The young girl was fatally electrocuted by a bare cable connected to the pumping machine inside the well as soon as power was reinstated.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, stated that the victim was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
According to Odutola, the case was reported to the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa by a concerned individual named Onyekachi Silas. Onyekachi explained that his sister-in-law, the deceased, was residing with them.
Detailing the tragic sequence of events, Onyekachi recounted how the power outage prompted the girl to fetch water, only for her to meet her untimely demise when electricity was unexpectedly restored.
The authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, and the girl’s body has been deposited at the Oke Lantoro morgue.
This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by electrical hazards. Just last year, on November 7, 2023, another tragic electrocution occurred in Aregbe, the state capital, when an electrician was fatally injured while assisting a neighbor with an electrical issue.
