In a significant development, Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has been impeached by the State House of Assembly on Monday.
The impeachment stemmed from the findings of a seven-man investigative panel tasked with probing allegations of misconduct against Shaibu.
The culmination of the impeachment proceedings witnessed a dramatic vote, resulting in Shaibu’s removal from office.
Background:
Earlier reports highlighted the proceedings of a seven-man panel investigating allegations of constitutional breaches against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. However, the panel concluded its sitting without Shaibu or his counsel appearing, prompting further actions.
The panel submitted its report to the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa.
Chaired by Justine Stephen A. Omonuwa (Rtd), the panel’s decision to adjourn for the last time was influenced by Shaibu’s absence and his counsel’s failure to appear during previous sittings.
During the inaugural session, Shaibu’s representation, Professor Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN), cited prior legal obligations, including a case at the Abuja High Court, as grounds for non-participation. Despite objections, the panel continued its proceedings.
In response, Justice Omonuwa (Rtd) announced the adjournment, granting Shaibu the opportunity to defend himself before the panel’s final deliberations in accordance with constitutional requirements.
