The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called upon Muslims nationwide to anticipate the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal, marking the end of Ramadan, immediately after sunset on Monday.

In a statement released by the Council’s Secretary-General, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Muslims were reminded of the obligation to promptly distribute Zakatul Fitr, a mandatory food levy for privileged Muslims to assist the less fortunate in society.

Scientific calculations predict the Shawwal moon conjunction in Nigeria to occur on Monday, April 8, at 07:21 p.m., according to Oloyede. Muslims are advised to search for the Shawwal crescent on the 29th of Ramadan, following Islamic tradition.

If the crescent is sighted, Tuesday, April 9, will mark the 1st of Shawwal and Eid ul Fitr. However, if the moon remains unseen, Eid ul Fitr will be observed on Wednesday, April 10.

The NSCIA also urged Muslims to fulfill their Zakatul Fitr obligations within the last two days of Ramadan, prior to the Eid prayer, to ensure timely assistance to beneficiaries.

Additionally, the Council encouraged Muslims to fervently pray for peace, security, and development in Nigeria during the concluding days of Ramadan.

The NSCIA anticipates an announcement from the President-General on Monday night, April 8, regarding the Shawwal moon sighting.
