In a session at the Ikeja Special Offences Court, startling revelations emerged as a former dispatch rider turned CBN staff disclosed how he facilitated multiple cash transactions totaling $3 million for the former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Monday Osasuwa, the CBN staff, provided his account before Justice Rahman Oshodi, detailing his journey from being a dispatch rider at Zenith Bank to a contracted employee at CBN in 2014.
Osasuwa recounted his familiarity with Emefiele during his tenure as Managing Director at Zenith Bank and later at CBN, where he eventually became a full-time senior supervisor in the Governor’s office in Lagos.
The witness narrated an incident in 2020 when Emefiele directed him to collect cash from a contact while he was away from Lagos. He emphasized that Emefiele often personally received cash when in Lagos but delegated the task to Osasuwa in his absence.
Additionally, Osasuwa shed light on Emefiele’s association with MINL Ltd, a company in Isolo, where he would collect cheques on behalf of Emefiele, later deposited into Dumies Oil and Gas account.
Under cross-examination, Osasuwa affirmed his long-standing association with Emefiele, dating back to 2002, and confirmed that Emefiele’s co-defendant, Henry Isioma-Omoile, had resided in Emefiele’s house for a period.
Despite admitting to collecting cheques for Dumies Oil and Gas since his time at Zenith Bank, Osasuwa maintained that he lacked precise records as instructed by Emefiele to deliver cash directly to his residence.
Regarding bail, Justice Oshodi granted Emefiele bail set at N50 million with stringent conditions, including two sureties with proof of gainful employment and three years of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Emefiele’s co-defendant, Isioma-Omoil, previously granted bail in another case, saw his bail conditions extended to this trial, with the requirement of registration in the Lagos State Bail Management System.
The trial is scheduled to resume on April 29, pending further deliberation on a closed section application.
