Former Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a misalignment between his personal convictions and the current direction of the party.

In his resignation letter addressed to the chairman of his constituency, Mbutu Ward, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Ihedioha reaffirmed his commitment to advancing democracy and good governance in Nigeria despite his decision to disassociate himself from the party.

Having been a member of the PDP since its inception in 1998, Ihedioha underscored his significant contributions to the party’s growth and evolution, recognizing its historical dedication to internal reforms and the provision of credible leadership both in and out of power.

However, Ihedioha expressed dismay over recent developments within the party, stating a departure from its fundamental principles. He voiced concerns regarding the party’s failure to implement internal reforms, uphold its regulations, and effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his letter, Ihedioha remarked, “Since 1998, I have dedicated myself to the advancement and transformation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as one of its founding members. Over the years, I have taken pride in the PDP’s commitment to introspection, internal reforms, and providing credible leadership for the nation. I have had the privilege of serving and benefiting from the party across various capacities.

“Regrettably, recent events have seen the party diverge from its core values. Despite my efforts to offer guidance, the party has, regrettably, faltered in its ability to enact internal reforms, enforce its regulations, or present a credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“It is with a heavy heart that I hereby tender my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party, effective immediately. While this decision was not taken lightly, I firmly believe it is the right one. Despite stepping away, I remain committed to contributing my expertise to the advancement of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”
