During a recent interaction at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja, Chairman Ola Olukoyede shared a startling account of a 17-year-old’s hacking skills. The young hacker managed to breach the chairman’s personal computer and bank account while under interrogation at the EFCC office in Lagos.
Olukoyede recounted the incident, describing how the teenager effortlessly bypassed his locked computer’s security measures. Despite studying History and Anthropology, unrelated to computer science, the boy demonstrated his proficiency with ease.
Expressing concern over the prevalence of such activities among young individuals, Olukoyede emphasized the importance of discouraging cybercrime while acknowledging the potential for rehabilitation. He advocated for lighter sentences coupled with educational initiatives to redirect youths away from criminal activities.
In a display of audacious prowess, the teenage hacker confidently asserted his ability to transfer large sums of money between accounts. Despite declining the demonstration, Olukoyede was taken aback by the boy’s skills.
When questioned about his involvement in cybercrime, the teenager cited familial responsibilities due to his parents’ inability to work on their farm amidst security concerns. Moved by the circumstances, Olukoyede pledged to support the boy’s education if he abandoned criminal activities.
This incident underscores the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate convicted cybercriminals and deter youth involvement in cybercrime. Olukoyede stressed the importance of preventing youths from becoming “ex-convicts” and advocated for proactive measures to steer them away from illegal activities.
