In a harrowing incident along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode expressway, gunmen, armed with A.K 47 rifles and numbering up to seven, have reportedly killed one person and abducted seven others.
The attack occurred between the Ilisan, Ceplast industry, and Iperu junction axis of the expressway on Friday, according to reports.
A chilling audio from one of the victims, a driver en route to Lagos, recounted how the gunmen ambushed their vehicles with gunfire, leading to the death of one individual in a Lexus car. The assailants then herded seven of them into the bush. The survivor, in a bid to save his life, spoke to the gunmen in Hausa, claiming familiarity with northern regions. Eventually, he and another driver were released after surrendering cash and valuables, while the fate of the remaining five abducted individuals remains unknown.
Confirming the incident, SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson of the Ogun State police command, labeled it as a case involving armed robbery, murder, and kidnapping. While details about the number of abducted individuals remain unconfirmed, the police discovered two bullet-riddled vehicles, including a Lexus Jeep 300 and a Lexus Jeep 350, as well as the body of an unidentified man with a gunshot wound to the head.
The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has expressed dismay over the security breach and has ordered tactical commanders and mobile squadrons to apprehend the perpetrators swiftly.
This incident echoes a similar tragedy three weeks ago when gunmen attacked Ajadeh Event Centre along the Iperu-Sagamu road, resulting in the death of Professor Yinka Olomojobi, a lecturer at Babcock University. One suspect, Awada Ishaya from Plateau State, has been apprehended in connection with the crime.
