Tension gripped Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, as parents and guardians hurriedly descended on schools to collect their children, fearing potential kidnappings.
The panic, fueled by rumors of gunmen invading Akesan Community Grammar School in Iperu to abduct five children, prompted parents to rush to the schools to ensure the safety of their wards.
While visiting one of the schools, our correspondent observed a significant police presence deployed to address the kidnapping scare. Additionally, local youth leaders were on-site to monitor the situation.
However, the Principal of Akesan Community Grammar School, Mrs. A. O. Yusuf, refuted claims of any kidnapping incident within the school premises. She explained that a woman had visited earlier, emotionally distressed, seeking reassurance about her grandchild’s safety. Mrs. Yusuf clarified that the child was safe and even received monetary assistance from the concerned grandmother.
Despite efforts to allay fears, parents remained adamant, insisting on taking their children home. Some demanded increased security measures such as fencing before allowing their children to return to school.
The recent surge in kidnapping incidents in the vicinity, including the invasion of Ajadeh Event Centre in Iperu Remo, which resulted in casualties and abductions, exacerbated the anxiety among residents.
Similarly, the recent attack on travelers along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, where gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles ambushed and abducted several individuals, further heightened concerns about security in the area.
