Members of the organized labour declared a nationwide indefinite strike on Friday, citing the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage beyond N60,000.
Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero, made this announcement during a press conference at Labour House in Abuja. He stated that the strike would commence at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
Earlier on Friday, negotiations on the minimum wage between the Federal Government and organized labour reached a deadlock when the government refused to increase its offer from N60,000. This impasse follows the NLC and TUC’s ultimatum for a new minimum wage by May 31, 2024.
On Tuesday, discussions broke down after the Federal Government and organized private sector proposed raising the minimum wage to N60,000. The government’s offer was an increase from its initial proposal of N57,000, but it was still rejected by labour representatives.
In contrast, labour representatives reduced their demand from N497,000 to N494,000 during the meeting, yet the negotiations remained unresolved.
Further details will be provided shortly.
