President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has committed to implementing a minimum wage exceeding N60,000 as the Tripartite Committee resumes its deliberations. The committee will convene daily over the next week to finalize the new minimum wage agreement.
This commitment was part of an agreement signed last night following an eight-hour meeting between Federal Government officials and leaders of Organized Labour. The meeting was held in response to the indefinite strike called by Labour over wage issues.
The agreement also stipulates that Labour leaders will convene with their critical bodies to decide on the one-day-old strike. It is anticipated that Labour will call off the strike since the agreement includes a clause preventing the government from retaliating against any union official involved in the strike.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Federal Government by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris and Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. Representing Labour were Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo.
