A 26-year-old security guard, Muhammed Abubakar, employed by a local businessman to guard a building in the Ajaka area of Sagamu, has allegedly killed an unidentified man following accusations that the man attempted to steal his phone.
According to police sources and local residents, the incident occurred on Monday evening. The victim, who suffered fatal injuries after being struck on the head with a plank, was pronounced dead at a Sagamu hospital around 9 p.m.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise from Abubakar’s post, prompting them to alert the Sagamu Police Division. In response, Inspector Ojo Alasofe was dispatched to investigate the disturbance.
“A resident went to the police station after hearing the noise. When we returned with the officer, we found the victim in a pool of blood, barely conscious, with Abubakar standing nearby,” a local resident recounted.
Abubakar claimed that the deceased had snatched his phone, leading to a chase. With the help of another security guard, the suspect was apprehended. A struggle ensued as Abubakar attempted to drag the man back to his post, during which he struck the man on the head with a large stick.
Passersby, alerted by the victim’s screams, called the police. Despite being rushed to Live Well Hospital in Ajaka, the victim was declared dead by a doctor.
When contacted, the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that Abubakar had fled, fearing the repercussions of the victim’s death. “Our officers are working tirelessly to apprehend Abubakar,” Odutola stated. “The victim’s body has been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for identification.”
This incident mirrors a similar case from September 2023, where two security guards in the Sango-Ota area were arrested for allegedly shooting a man in the eye following a disagreement. The man had confronted the guards for abandoning their post, leading to a fatal altercation.
