Finidi George has resigned from his position as the coach of the Super Eagles after only two games, both of which ended without a win.

His resignation follows a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic on matchday four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, extending the Super Eagles’ winless streak to four games. The news was confirmed by former Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye on his X account on Saturday.

Ibitoye wrote, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”

A source within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also confirmed the resignation, adding that the federation is considering new candidates for the position and may reduce the head coach’s salary.

Finidi, 53, was appointed in May after Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro left following the 2023 African Cup of Nations. In March, Finidi served as interim coach for international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

With Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes in jeopardy, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau has pledged to take all necessary measures to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Following a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh, in Abuja, Gusau emphasized the federation’s commitment to improving the team’s performance.

“It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football. But we are working tirelessly with the minister to develop comprehensive strategies to turn things around,” Gusau said. “We are determined to fight until the end to secure Nigeria’s place in the World Cup. Soon, you will see significant steps taken by the NFF to achieve this goal.”
