Kano State Police Commissioner, AIG Usaini Gumel, has explained why the police did not follow Governor Abba Yusuf’s directive to evict the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.
Governor Yusuf, through the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, had instructed the Police Commissioner to remove the deposed 15th Emir of Kano from the Nasarawa mini palace on Thursday night.
In an interview with The Punch on Friday, the Police Commissioner stated that obeying the governor’s order would be “jumping the gun.” He clarified that the same government that issued the eviction order had filed a case at the State High Court regarding the matter, which is scheduled for hearing on Monday, June 24, 2024.
“The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the government has already filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which is to be heard on June 24, 2024. Acting on the order before the court’s decision would be pre-empting the court’s ruling,” he explained.
Security has been heightened around the Nasarawa mini palace where the deposed Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, is staying. A Punch correspondent who visited the mini palace at 11:30 am reported an increased presence of security personnel. All four major routes to the palace have been blocked, and the deposed Emir remains inside with his palace guards and supporters.
One of Bayero’s supporters, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the deposed Emir is still in the mini palace, receiving traditional greetings from loyal traditional rulers.
“There are rumors circulating that a bulldozer has been stationed at the palace in preparation for its demolition. This is mere social media propaganda,” the supporter added.
