The Ogun State Police Command announced on Monday that a pregnant woman, Rahemat Lateef, who claimed to have been abducted while en route to the state hospital at Ijaiye, Abeokuta for childbirth, had staged her own kidnapping.
SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, disclosed the incident on her X handle.
Odutola explained that Lateef, after discovering she had suffered another miscarriage, faked her abduction to avoid her husband’s anger, who was expecting her to give birth.
Lateef reportedly fled to Kwara State and later returned to Abeokuta with her father.
According to sources, Lateef was frustrated by repeated miscarriages and fabricated the kidnapping story as a way out.
Providing updates on the incident, Odutola stated, “Rahemat Lateef, whom her husband reported as abducted, was never abducted. She planned her journey to Kwara State to escape her husband’s wrath due to repeated miscarriages.”
“She devised the story and traveled to Kwara State herself. She was far from being kidnapped. After suffering a miscarriage and fearing her husband’s reaction, she orchestrated this script. The anti-kidnapping team tracked her until she reappeared,” Odutola added. “She is now under medical attention and is safe.”
Last Thursday, Rahemat’s husband, Ogunbunmi Lateef, claimed he had received a WhatsApp message notifying him of his wife’s abduction by unknown kidnappers.
Odutola confirmed the report on her X handle, stating, “One Ogunbunmi Lateef of Oke Lantoro reported that his pregnant wife, due for delivery, left home for the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta. He received a WhatsApp message confirming her abduction by unknown armed men.”
