The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has declared that those flying the Russian flag in Nigeria have committed a treasonable offence.
Reports indicated that some protesters of the #EndBadGovernance movement were seen waving Russian flags in various parts of the country.
Following an emergency security session with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, General Musa asserted that the law would take its course against such individuals. He warned those calling for a coup that the military is committed to democracy and will not tolerate any attempts at regime change.
“We briefed Mr. President on the current situation. Although the protests began peacefully, some individuals have exploited the situation to cause mayhem, including looting and other criminal activities,” General Musa stated.
He continued, “It is completely unacceptable for foreign flags to be flown within Nigeria’s sovereignty. This is a treasonable offence, and it will be treated as such. We will not tolerate anyone being used to undermine our nation.”
Addressing the issue of coups, General Musa emphasized, “Nigeria is a sovereign, democratic nation, and all security agencies are committed to defending democracy. Any attempts to change the government will not be accepted. We stand firmly in support of democracy and will defend it at all costs.”
He also noted, “Many of those waving foreign flags are being manipulated, often by sponsors who we are actively investigating. We have identified the areas where these activities are taking place and will take serious action against the perpetrators.”
“The President has instructed us to ensure that peace and tranquillity are maintained in Nigeria. We are working in close synergy to guarantee this. The military will intervene if necessary to uphold Nigeria’s sovereignty. Flying foreign flags within our borders crosses a red line, and those responsible will be prosecuted,” General Musa concluded.
