A tragic road accident on Akarigbo Road, Sabo, Sagamu, Ogun State, resulted in the death of an unidentified pedestrian and led to the mob setting a vehicle ablaze on Sunday.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when the driver of a Toyota vehicle, with the number plate LND125VD, lost control and collided with a Bajaj motorcycle, registered FFF450VH, ridden by Friday Oni. The impact of the collision reportedly threw both Oni and a nearby pedestrian into an open drainage.

The pedestrian and motorcyclist were immediately rushed to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) for medical attention. Unfortunately, the pedestrian succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In the chaos that followed, the driver of the Toyota vehicle fled the scene to avoid arrest. In response, a group of irate youths set the abandoned vehicle on fire before law enforcement and other emergency response teams arrived at the scene.

Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and stated, “The driver of the vehicle was reported to be heading towards Kara, Sabo, Sagamu, when he lost control and collided with the motorcycle rider, who then struck a pedestrian. Both victims were thrown into a gutter.”

She added that the pedestrian’s body had been taken to the OOUTH morgue, while the damaged vehicle and motorcycle were recovered and secured in Sagamu for further investigation.

The situation has underscored the growing tensions and frustrations among locals regarding road safety in the area. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
