A student of Obada Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun state, Monday Ariyo, has died following a disciplinary punishment allegedly administered by a teacher. According to reports, the teacher ordered Ariyo to perform 162 frog jumps and struck him 24 times with a cane as punishment for breaking a dustbin.

The incident was brought to light by activist Adetoun on Instagram, who shared details of the event. According to her, the teacher brought a dustbin to the classroom, instructing students not to damage it. Ariyo allegedly joked that the dustbin was bought with the students’ money, a comment which reportedly angered the teacher. The teacher subsequently reported Ariyo’s comment to the school principal, who allegedly instructed that Ariyo be disciplined.

Acting on this directive, the teacher reportedly subjected Ariyo to the physical punishment, during which Ariyo collapsed. Adetoun claimed that despite witnessing the incident, school staff delayed taking Ariyo to the hospital. By the time he was finally taken for medical attention, he was pronounced dead.

Ogun State Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the tragic incident in a statement to newsmen on Friday. Contrary to some initial reports, she clarified that Ariyo was made to do 162 frog jumps and was caned 24 times, not 162. The incident occurred on October 15, 2024, and Ariyo was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta on October 25. His body has been taken to the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy and an investigation is currently underway.
