A domestic dispute in the Elega area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, ended in tragedy on Saturday night after a man, identified as Olamide, accidentally killed his one-year-old son, Ayinde, while attempting to attack his wife during a violent altercation.

According to eyewitnesses and a video from the scene, Olamide reportedly picked up an iron rod—part of a weightlifting set—during the heated argument and attempted to strike his wife. Tragically, the rod hit their infant son on the head.

The child was rushed to a nearby hospital, Trinity, by neighbors who responded to the wife’s distress call. Medical personnel at the hospital confirmed the child had died from the injury. In a desperate bid to save him, neighbors sought further medical help after noticing faint sounds from the boy, but doctors later reconfirmed his death.

A co-tenant, Mrs. Bolatito, who witnessed the aftermath, said, “Around midnight, I heard her calling for help. She said Olamide had killed their baby. When I got there, she was crying and asking for help to get to the hospital.”

The community chairman, Ramoni Adegbola, confirmed the incident and alleged that Olamide had a history of domestic abuse and drug use. “This wasn’t their first fight. The man often takes illicit drugs. There was a time he collapsed after taking something strange, and we had to assist him.”

Olamide reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident but later turned himself in at a nearby police station.

When contacted for comment, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident. “It happened, and the police are investigating,” she said.

The tragic case has sparked outrage and concern over rising domestic violence cases in the region. Police say a full investigation is underway and further updates will be made available to the public.
