The Federal Government has released N50 billion for the settlement of earned allowances owed to academic and non-academic staff in federal universities, fulfilling a commitment made by President Bola Tinubu.
This was announced on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, in a statement titled “FG Releases N50bn Earned Allowances to Varsity Unions, Tinubu Reaffirms Education Priority”, issued by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education.
According to the statement, the release of the funds reflects the administration’s determination to reposition the education sector as a cornerstone of national development.
“This move is yet another testament to President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to fundamentally transform Nigeria’s education sector,” Boriowo stated. “It underscores the administration’s resolve to shift Nigeria from a resource-based to a knowledge-driven economy through strategic investments in education, infrastructure, and human capital.”
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the intervention goes beyond financial settlement, describing it as a reaffirmation of the President’s belief in the potential of Nigerian youth and the vital role of university staff in shaping their future.
“By prioritising the welfare of academic and non-academic staff, we are laying the groundwork for a future where every Nigerian child can access quality, globally competitive education,” he said.
The Minister also conveyed President Tinubu’s appreciation to the university unions for their continued cooperation and commitment to peace across federal institutions.
“Notably, the country is currently experiencing one of the longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent history—a feat made possible by the mutual understanding and shared dedication between the government and the university community,” the statement noted.
President Tinubu reiterated his dedication to youth development, stating, “The youth are the heartbeat of our country. Their future is extremely important to me and my administration. Keeping our children in school is non-negotiable. I am committed to ensuring that strikes in our institutions soon become a thing of the past.”
It will be recalled that university-based unions have long clashed with previous administrations over the non-payment of earned allowances and other unmet demands.
