Thirteen-year-old Michelle Ibidapo, a student of The Grange School, Ikeja, made headlines at the Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival by winning gold in the 1,500m women’s freestyle event, representing Team Oyo.
Michelle first gained national attention at the National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, where her potential was evident. Since then, she has progressed rapidly through Nigeria’s sporting ranks to claim top honours at the country’s premier multi-sport event.
Reflecting on her achievement, Michelle shared the mindset that drove her to victory:
“Coming into this competition, I was focused. I had my mind on winning a medal, even though I wasn’t sure what colour. During the last lap, I reminded myself to stay focused and by the end, it turned into gold.”
Her triumph in Shagamu underscores the importance of grassroots competitions like the NYG in identifying and nurturing talent, while also highlighting the expanding opportunities for young athletes to shine on bigger stages.
