Adekunle Akinlade, the former deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State during the 2023 elections, has formally announced his resignation from the party.

Popularly known as Triple A, Akinlade cited persistent and unresolved internal crises within the Ogun State chapter of the PDP as the primary reason for his departure. In a press statement made available to newsmen on Monday, he expressed deep concerns over what he described as systemic failures and internal sabotage within the party.

“After a period of deep introspection and wide-ranging consultations with party members, political associates, respected leaders, stakeholders, and my family, I formally announce my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with immediate effect,” Akinlade stated.

He lamented that despite his group’s genuine commitment to party-building and the provision of credible leadership, their efforts were repeatedly frustrated by what he described as “deliberate obstructions, institutional disregard, and acts of bad faith” from both the zonal and national leadership of the party.

According to him, the National Working Committee (NWC) failed to act as a neutral arbiter during the 2024 local government and state congresses, instead aligning with a particular faction in Ogun State. He alleged that the NWC violated the PDP constitution by recognizing a parallel membership register during the congresses.

“Our group had complied with all procedural requirements during the registration exercise, submitting duly compiled and authenticated membership registers containing over 49,000 names. These were accepted and used for the Ward Congresses of August 2024,” he explained.

However, he said the party leadership later substituted their validated register with another group’s list, leading to the imposition of unauthorized congress outcomes and triggering parallel congresses across the 236 wards, 20 local governments, and the state level. These actions, Akinlade noted, have resulted in ongoing legal battles now before the Court of Appeal.

He further criticized the PDP’s conduct during the recently concluded South West Zonal Congress, claiming his bloc was entirely excluded, thereby missing another opportunity for genuine reconciliation.

“The current turmoil within the national structure of the PDP, coupled with growing defections across the federation, raises valid concerns about the future and direction of the party,” Akinlade said.

“As a leader with a duty to my constituents, political family, and supporters, I cannot continue to associate with a party whose internal processes are defined by selective justice and institutional bias.”

He concluded by saying that consultations are ongoing regarding his next political move, which will be announced in the coming days.
