An upcoming 19-year-old Nigerian artiste, identified simply as Destiny, has reportedly died after being severely beaten in the Volta Region of Ghana.
It was gathered that the tragic incident occurred on May 28, following a dispute over an alleged financial misappropriation linked to a business venture.
Sources close to the matter revealed that a Nigerian man based in Ghana, said to be one of those who facilitated Destiny’s relocation to the country, accused the young artiste of failing to remit funds from the said venture. The man, along with two others, allegedly stormed Destiny’s apartment to confront him.
“When Destiny could not provide convincing answers, they descended on him and beat him mercilessly,” a source familiar with the incident said. The source, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak publicly, added that Destiny succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.
“Destiny went to Ghana to further his education, and his relocation was arranged by someone he regarded as a ‘street brother.’ Those same individuals provided him with accommodation. Reports from Ghana indicate that the suspects had introduced him to a business. They later accused him of diverting funds and, in anger, attacked him in his apartment. The beating was so brutal that he became weak and died from his injuries,” the source said.
It was alleged that the suspects abandoned Destiny’s lifeless body in the apartment after realizing he was no longer responsive.
Another source told our correspondent that police discovered the body days later, after being alerted to the incident. “Some officers were dispatched to the scene where his remains were recovered. As of now, no arrests have been made. We are hoping the Ghanaian authorities apprehend the culprits and ensure justice is served,” the source added.
A video obtained by our correspondent shows Destiny introducing himself and outlining his dreams. In the footage, he said:
“I am Destiny and I am a streamer from Nigeria. I want to apply to Streamers University, and this will be a great joy for me, my mother, and everybody. I am also an artiste and a gamer. I do all sorts of things.”
The tragic incident echoes a similar report in April, when a 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, Olatunji Bolaji, was shot dead in Philadelphia, United States. Bolaji, who lived in Norristown, Pennsylvania, was killed after picking up a passenger outside a hookah lounge. According to police, another vehicle pulled up, and two men opened fire, fatally shooting both Bolaji and his passenger.
As the Nigerian community mourns another tragic loss abroad, calls are growing for justice and better protection of citizens living overseas.
