Today, we stand united as a people to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day, a day that echoes the resilient spirit of our nation and honours the ultimate sacrifice of one of our greatest heroes of democracy, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.
Beyond being a date, June 12 is a symbol of the unyielding desire of Nigerians for freedom, fairness and a voice that truly matters. It marks the struggle, the courage and the price paid in our pursuit of democratic governance.
As we reflect on our journey so far, we must never forget the ideals for which MKO Abiola lived and died which include equity, justice, unity and the power of the people’s mandate. These values must continue to guide us as leaders and citizens alike.
Let this day serve as a renewed call to action, to deepen our democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law, protect the rights of every citizen and work collectively towards a Nigeria that honours the dreams of our heroes past.
On this Democracy Day, I salute all Nigerians — especially the young, the hopeful and the tireless – whose voices remain the true guardians of our democracy. May we never lose sight of the promise of June 12.
Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.
