Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness.
In an official statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed the passing of the former leader, noting that Buhari died at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the United Kingdom.
Reacting swiftly, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the UK immediately to oversee arrangements and accompany the remains of the late President back to Nigeria.
The statement also confirmed that Tinubu has personally spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, widow of the late President, to offer his heartfelt condolences.
As a mark of national respect, the President has ordered all flags across the country to be flown at half-mast.
Buhari’s death marks the end of a significant era in Nigeria’s political history. A former military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985, he later returned to lead the country as a civilian president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.
Renowned for his austere leadership style and anti-corruption stance, Buhari had long struggled with health challenges, frequently traveling to the United Kingdom for medical care.
