In a remarkable story of love, resilience, and modern medicine, 56-year-old Australian grandmother Angela Peters has given birth to twin girls, Khorus and Knowyn, following a whirlwind romance and IVF journey with her 39-year-old Nigerian husband, Bright.

A mother of five and grandmother of 12, Angela described the moment pink confetti rained down at their gender reveal party as one of the happiest in her life. “I may have been 56 years old… but I’d never been happier,” she told The Sun.

Angela’s unexpected journey back to motherhood began in 2019, after she ended her marriage of more than two decades. “Raising my kids was the joy of my life, but over the years, I realised I wasn’t happy in my marriage,” she recalled.

In 2020, she joined an online dating site and initially connected with a Nigerian man named Emeka. But it was Emeka’s younger brother, Bright—a cook based in South Africa—who truly caught her attention. “When I saw his photo, it was like a thunderbolt. I knew this was the man I was meant to be with.”

Despite a 17-year age gap and the 9,000-mile distance between them, their bond deepened. Angela flew to Nigeria in early 2021 to meet Bright in person. “Hugging him for the first time, I felt like I’d known him my whole life,” she said. Bright proposed the very next day, and the couple married in a quiet civil ceremony just nine days later.

Initially, Angela’s children were alarmed by the sudden romance. “They were worried Bright was a romance scammer,” she admitted. However, as time passed, Bright gained the family’s trust and affection.

Already going through perimenopause, Angela had believed that having more children was no longer possible. Bright, however, remained hopeful—particularly for twin daughters. Moved by his wish, Angela even considered surrogacy or suggested he have a baby with another woman. “Luckily, fate had other plans,” she said.

During a trip to Nigeria in 2023, the couple discovered fertility clinics that treated older women. Using donor eggs and Bright’s sperm, Angela underwent IVF—and to her surprise, was able to carry the pregnancy herself. “We were overwhelmed with joy when the test came back positive,” she said.

At their eight-week scan, they heard not one, but two heartbeats—confirming Bright’s dream of twin girls. “Seeing the pink confetti fall, I realised Bright’s prediction was coming true,” Angela said.

Facing criticism online due to her age, Angela dismissed the backlash as rooted in double standards. “It’s sexist… men have children in their 60s or older and no one bats an eyelid. I knew the girls would always have a large, loving family.”

In August 2024, the couple welcomed their twin daughters, each weighing 5 pounds. Angela described the experience as her smoothest pregnancy yet. “I was changing nappies and doing night feeds without blinking.”

Her daughter, Deina, 28, who initially feared the relationship was a scam, later changed her mind. “Then I got the shocking news they’d married—and wanted me to be their surrogate!” she said, laughing. “But Mum flew through the pregnancy and put my mind at rest. She’s incredible with the girls. It’s a wonder to see.”

Angela now hopes her story will inspire others. “To anyone dreaming of motherhood later in life, don’t lose hope,” she said. “My journey took me across continents, but it led me to this beautiful moment. Now, both my hands and my heart are full.”
