Organized Labour in Ogun State has announced the suspension of the ongoing industrial strike which began on Monday, July 14, 2025, following the signing of a Memorandum of Action (MoA) with the state government.

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) said the decision to put the strike on hold was taken to allow for the implementation of agreements reached with the government.

The labour leaders emphasized that while work resumes today, the struggle for improved welfare and labour dignity is far from over.

The suspension of the strike, they noted, was largely influenced by the timely interventions of paramount traditional rulers, national labour leaders, and veteran labour activists within and outside the country.

“Their wise counsel, passionate mediation, and tireless efforts helped open a path for constructive dialogue with the State Government,” the statement read.

According to Labour, several rounds of intense engagements with government officials culminated in a jointly signed MoA which outlines key actions to be taken to address the demands of workers in the state.

The document, labour leaders said, was a result of “deep and meaningful contributions aimed at safeguarding the future of the workforce and restoring dignity to labour.”

Citing unfavourable security reports, Labour also disclosed that the safety of workers became a top priority, leading to the decision to suspend all public mass gatherings.

“In light of these developments and the temporary agreements reached with the government, Labour resolved to suspend the strike as a demonstration of good faith,” the statement added, assuring that the agreements would be closely monitored for compliance.

Despite the suspension, Labour called on all civil and public servants in the state to remain steadfast, resolute, and united.

“Yes, the strike is suspended, but the struggle is not over. Let us continue to uphold the spirit of unity and maintain faith in the fulfillment of our expectations as outlined in the agreement.”

The union leaders reassured the workforce that no worker would face victimisation for participating in the strike, urging everyone to return to work without fear.

Labour expressed deep appreciation to Ogun State workers for their unwavering solidarity, courage, and resilience throughout the duration of the strike.

“Your voices, actions, and sacrifices have not gone unnoticed. Together, we have shown that a united workforce is a powerful force for change.”

The joint statement was signed by Comrade Hameed-Benco Ademola (NLC Chairman), Comrade Olude (JNC Chairman), Comrade Lasisi Akeem (TUC Chairman), and other senior labour leaders in the state.
