Five people, including three suspected internet fraudsters (Yahoo boys) and two residents, have lost their lives in a fatal car crash linked to a ₦30,000 racing wager in Ipara Remo, Ogun State.

The accident occurred around 1:40 p.m. on Monday near the Owolowo area when an unregistered Lexus car, allegedly participating in the contest, lost control at high speed and rammed into a roadside shop. Two bystanders — identified as Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo — died instantly.

According to community sources, the suspected Yahoo boys had organised the race with a ₦30,000 prize for the winner. One of the vehicles veered off the road, trapping its three occupants inside. Emergency responders rescued them and rushed them to separate hospitals, but all later died from their injuries.

Multiple videos circulating on social media show lifeless bodies at the scene, the mangled car, and the damaged building, with voices of mourners lamenting the tragic loss.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the driver died on the spot while his two passengers later succumbed to their injuries.

“The driver, whose name is yet to be identified, was heading towards Fidiwo when he lost control and hit the two pedestrians by the roadside. The remaining occupants died at Isara State Hospital and Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu,” Akinbiyi stated.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, a man was crushed to death in Abeokuta after falling from a moving motorcycle and being run over by a Volvo truck along the Rounder area.
