Veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, has passed away at the age of 70.
The news was confirmed on Friday by movie executive and producer Seun Oloketuyi in an Instagram post, in which he wrote:
“Popular actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, died Friday morning. Details soon.”
A household name in the Yoruba film industry, Chief Kanran was celebrated for his distinctive style, refined elegance, love for luxury, sharp wit, and commanding performances that illuminated both stage and screen for decades.
In a 2020 interview, the actor opened up about stepping back from the movie industry, citing politics and cliques within the profession.
“Some people in the industry see people like me as a threat because I will not do anything that is not professional, and that has made some people upset with me,” he said at the time.
Chief Kanran began his career on stage before moving into television and film, earning nationwide recognition as part of a popular NTA drama series before becoming a mainstay in Yoruba cinema.
Over the years, he featured in numerous notable productions, including Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala, often portraying authoritative figures such as kings, chiefs, or respected elders.
As of the time of filing this report, details about the cause of his death have not yet been disclosed.
