The Ogun State Gateway International Airport has received its Aerodrome Operational Permit from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), authorizing the commencement of scheduled commercial air transport services.
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the development, describing it as a historic milestone and the first of its kind in Nigeria. The permit follows a rigorous technical inspection, on-site verification, and operational audit by NCAA officials, who reportedly commended the airport as a benchmark for aviation infrastructure in the country.
The newly approved facility holds an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an ARFFS Category of 6. It is licensed for daytime operations from sunrise to sunset, with a non-precision runway category for Runway 05/23 and an Area Navigation (RNAV) approach type.
In a boost to its international profile, a major global logistics company has committed to operating two weekly cargo flights from London to the airport. Additionally, the NCAA has designated it as the alternate airport to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, enhancing its strategic importance for both domestic and international aviation.
Governor Abiodun revealed that passenger flights will soon commence, with direct routes to Abuja and Port Harcourt in the initial phase. He expressed confidence that the airport would open new opportunities for trade, investment, and tourism, firmly positioning Ogun State as a global player.
“With world-class infrastructure, international connectivity, and a strategic location, the Gateway International Airport will redefine air travel standards in Nigeria and stand as a proud symbol of our vision for a greater Ogun State,” the Governor said.
The launch of full operations at the Gateway International Airport is expected to drive Ogun State’s economic transformation agenda, underscoring the administration’s commitment to sustainable growth and global relevance.
