Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has charged the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council to ensure fairness and transparency in the process of appointing a new Awujale of Ijebuland.

The stool became vacant following the passing of the revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, after a reign that spanned over 65 years.

Speaking after a meeting with the Chiefs-in-Council at his Iperu residence, Governor Abiodun said it was imperative to install a new Awujale without delay, noting that “nature abhors a vacuum.”

He assured Ijebu indigenes that his administration would support whoever emerges through the due process of nomination.

> “The process of installing another Awujale has started. What we discussed is the pathway to ensuring that all the processes enshrined in the laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed.

“I must say that all of us agreed we are on the same page, and this will put paid to the rumours that have been agog about one thing or another,” the governor said.

Abiodun expressed optimism that the succession process would be rancour-free, stressing that all contenders would be given equal opportunity. He commended the Council members, describing them as respected figures who contributed immensely to the peaceful reign of the late monarch.

The governor added that his first formal meeting with the Chiefs was deliberately delayed until after the 40-day mourning period, both to commiserate with them and to reassure the people of his confidence in the kingmakers.

> “The Council is intact, with no disharmony among them. They are working hand in glove with each other, and I am happy with today’s meeting,” he noted.

Also speaking, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the commitment of the Chiefs-in-Council to unity, peace, and progress in Ijebuland, pledging that members would continue to work as a team in the succession process.
