A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a senior government official, to eight years in prison for embezzlement, months after he became embroiled in a sex tape scandal that gripped the country.
The Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting funds originally claimed as professional travel expenses for personal use, the Supreme Court’s press director, Hilario Mitogo, confirmed in a message to reporters.
Engonga, the married former head of the national financial investigation agency, was tried alongside five other senior officials accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich Central African nation.
Known by the nickname “Bello,” Engonga first drew international attention in November when explicit videos of him with other officials’ wives surfaced online. Some of the clips, reportedly filmed inside his office at the finance ministry, circulated widely on social media while he was already in detention awaiting trial.
The scandal sparked a wave of online parodies, including songs, dance challenges, and posts about a spoof virility drug mockingly named “Balthazariem.”
The court also imposed a fine of $220,000 on Engonga in addition to his prison sentence.
