Nigeria was plunged into yet another blackout on Wednesday following the collapse of the national electricity grid.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a public notice issued via its official X handle, stating that the disruption occurred at about 11:23 a.m. on September 10, 2025.
According to the notice, the loss of supply from the national grid has affected electricity distribution across its franchise areas.
“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” AEDC said.
The company, however, assured customers that efforts were underway to restore supply.
“Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your patience and understanding,” it added, while also providing its customer care hotlines for further inquiries.
The collapse adds to Nigeria’s long-running electricity challenges. In 2024 alone, the national grid failed 12 times, and over the past decade, more than 100 recorded collapses have left millions without power.
In February this year, a similar incident left much of the country in darkness. In response to the recurring failures, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April granted approval to six companies and a private university to generate and distribute electricity independently.
Yet, in its July market report, NERC insisted that no system collapse or disturbance was recorded in the first quarter of 2025.
