The National Council of State has approved the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, from Kogi State in the North-Central region, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This followed the presentation of Amupitan’s nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman from 2015 until October 2025.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President informed the Council that Amupitan’s selection marked the first time a nominee from Kogi State would head the electoral body. He described the law professor as an “apolitical individual with a proven record of integrity.”

“Council members unanimously supported the nomination, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo describing Professor Amupitan as a man of integrity,” the statement added.
