Former Real Madrid and Everton winger Royston Drenthe has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke at the age of 38.
The former Netherlands international was admitted to hospital on Friday, according to FC de Rebellen, an agency representing former professional footballers, including Drenthe.
Confirming the development in a statement, the agency said:
“Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke. Drenthe is currently receiving good care and is in good hands. The team and those involved hope for a speedy recovery.”
Drenthe began his professional career with Feyenoord before earning a move to Real Madrid in 2007, where he won the La Liga title in his debut season.
He later had a loan spell with Everton during the 2011–12 Premier League season and went on to play for Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, and several other clubs across Europe.
Reacting to the news, Everton extended its support to the Dutchman on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Everyone at Everton wishes Royston Drenthe a full and speedy return to full health after reports he’s been taken to hospital.”
Drenthe, who retired from professional football in 2022, has since transitioned into acting and music, occasionally appearing in charity and exhibition matches.
