A director with the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Serifat Talabi, has died in a hit-and-run accident just four days before her scheduled retirement and 60th birthday celebration.
It was gathered that Talabi was knocked down by an unidentified driver on Saturday while attempting to cross the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near the Redemption Camp in Ogun State.
A senior official in the Lagos State Civil Service, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Tuesday, describing it as “deeply tragic.”
“She was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver while trying to cross the expressway around the Redemption Camp. Efforts were made to rush her to the hospital, but she was confirmed dead on arrival,” the source said.
Until her death, Talabi served as the Director of Procurement at the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASSRA).
According to another source within the agency, Talabi was originally scheduled to retire on Monday, October 13, but the send-forth ceremony was postponed to Wednesday, October 22, to accommodate the presence of the agency’s General Manager.
“She had already printed invitation cards for her retirement and 60th birthday celebration, which was to hold at the NERDC Conference Centre in Ikeja. Everyone was looking forward to the event before the tragic news broke,” the source added.
An invitation card sighted by journalists indicated that the event was billed to take place at the NERDC Conference Centre, NERDC Road, Ikeja, adjacent to the Fela Shrine.
Meanwhile, the Eagle Online reported that Talabi’s family has released her burial arrangements. The wake-keep will be held on October 23, 2025, while the burial service will take place on October 24, 2025, both at 10, Ore-Ofe Street, Ara Hall Bus Stop, Ibafo, Ogun State.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of LASSRA, Basirat Lawal, and the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, for comments were unsuccessful as calls and text messages to their phone lines went unanswered as of press time.
Talabi’s death adds to the growing list of pedestrians killed by reckless drivers along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and other major highways linking Lagos and Ogun States.
In August, a motorcyclist and his passenger were reportedly crushed to death along the Ago-Iwoye/Ilisan Expressway in the Ijebu area of Ogun State after a speeding truck rammed into their motorcycle and fled the scene.
