Civil society groups have called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, over the distribution of more than 100 electricity transformers allegedly funded by the federal government but presented as personal birthday gifts.
Senator Adeola, who represents Ogun West Senatorial District, had announced the donation of 102 transformers to 435 communities across Ogun State as part of activities marking his 56th birthday celebration.
The gesture, widely publicized as a philanthropic initiative, has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability after reports emerged that the transformers were part of federally funded constituency projects captured in the 2024 and 2025 national budgets.
A civic technology organisation, MonITNG, accused the senator of misleading the public by rebranding government-funded projects as personal donations.
According to the group, the transformers were linked to two federal projects valued at ₦125 million and ₦200 million, respectively, for the supply and installation of 500KVA transformers across communities in the Ogun East Senatorial District.
“It is misleading to present these public projects as private birthday gifts or personal interventions,” MonITNG said in a statement. “Public resources should not be used for political image-building.”
The organisation also questioned the competence of the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA) and the National Productivity Centre (NPC), which were allegedly involved in executing the projects, arguing that both agencies lack the technical capacity to manage power infrastructure installations.
MonITNG urged the anti-graft agencies to investigate the funding sources, procurement processes, and implementation of the transformer distribution, stressing the need for transparency in the use of public funds.
“Public office should serve the people, not personal ambitions. Transparency and accountability must remain the foundation of true leadership,” the group added.
Senator Adeola, a two-term lawmaker known for his wide network of constituency projects and growing political influence in Ogun State, has yet to respond to the allegations.
