The Ogun State Government has sealed the popular Adatan Market in Abeokuta, the state capital, over environmental infractions and illegal roadside trading.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environmental Protection and Chairman of the State Task Force on Environmental Compliance, Mr. Farouk Akintunde, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

Akintunde explained that the market was shut after traders were found dumping refuse indiscriminately into drainage channels and displaying goods on walkways and over drainages, in clear violation of environmental laws.

He said the government would no longer tolerate acts that endanger public health or undermine the state’s environmental sanitation efforts.

“Market traders across the state should take ownership of drainage channels in front of their shops, desilt and clear them to prevent flooding,” Akintunde warned.

“They should also note that every Thursday has been designated for market sanitation across Ogun State, and compliance will be strictly enforced.”

The OGEPA boss added that the decision to seal Adatan Market followed several months of warnings and engagements with traders, which yielded no improvement.

According to him, the enforcement action underscores the state government’s zero tolerance for environmental pollution and its renewed commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Similarly, Alaga Restaurant, located along Mercy Road, Panseke, and Sintinatti Bar in Oke-Ilewo, both in Abeokuta, were sealed for poor wastewater management and improper discharge of effluents into the environment.

Meanwhile, recent similar enforcement actions have been recorded in other states. On Tuesday, the Nasarawa State Government ordered the closure of the Lafia Modern Market following deteriorating sanitary conditions within the facility.

Likewise, in early October, the Lagos State Government shut down the Itedo Market in Lekki indefinitely over repeated environmental violations and illegal roadside trading.
