…..dismisses viral report, says misinformation fueling needless speculation.

The Nigerian government has debunked reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to meet with United States Vice President J.D. Vance in Washington this week.

In a post on his official X handle on Monday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, described the report as “misleading” and the product of misinformation.

Ajayi said the claim, which originated from online sources, had triggered “uninformed commentaries” about the President’s diplomatic itinerary.

“There’s a story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true,” Ajayi wrote. “If President Tinubu is going to the White House, he won’t be going to see a Vice President.”

The clarification followed reports that Tinubu was preparing for “top-level diplomatic engagements” amid international reactions to alleged attacks on Christians in Nigeria and a controversial statement by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently threatened possible military action.

In a post on his Truth Social account on Saturday, Trump warned that the U.S. might “go in guns blazing” if Nigeria failed to end what he described as the killing of Christians.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the USA will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’” Trump wrote.

The Nigerian government has since dismissed Trump’s claims, reiterating that the Tinubu administration remains committed to combating terrorism and safeguarding the rights of all citizens regardless of religion.

In a separate statement shared on his X handle, President Tinubu reaffirmed that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, adding that his government continues to engage faith leaders to promote peace and national unity.

“Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” Tinubu said. “Since 2023, our administration has maintained open engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security challenges affecting citizens across all faiths and regions.”
